Alder pollen in Finland ripens after a short exposure to warm days in early spring, showing biennial variation in the onset of pollen ripening

Abstract We developed a temperature sum model to predict the daily pollen release of alder, based on pollen data collected with pollen traps at seven locations in Finland over the years 2000–2014. We estimated the model parameters by minimizing the sum of squared errors (SSE) of the model, with weights that put more weight on binary recognition of daily presence or absence of pollen. The model results suggest that alder pollen ripens after a couple of warm days in February, while the whole pollen release period typically takes up to 4 weeks. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of 50 Hz magnetic or static magnetic fields of 0.5 mT on subsets of human CD4(+) T cells in terms of cytokine release/content, cell proliferation and intracellular free calcium concentration. CD4(+) T cells can be divided into different subsets on the basis of surface marker expression, such as CD45, and T cells can be divided into naive (CD45RA(+)) and memory (CD45RA(-)) cells. Aim of the investigations was to explore the weatherability performance of selected polymer films. The results were correlated with each other, so that measurable changes can be attributed to chemical and/or physical effects. Therefore, polyols with different aromatic content were produced. The resins were crosslinked with melamine-formaldehyde resin (1K system) and polyisocyanurate (2K system), respectively. Tumour Blood Flow Following Local Ultrasound Heating Computed from Thermal Clearance Curves

Thermal clearance curves following termination of ultrasound-induced hyperthermia in human mammary carcinomas implanted into the flanks of nude rats were studied. They were found to be monoexponential in form, both with and without blood flow. From the difference between the inverse time constants with and without flow, the tumour blood flow rate could be calculated. Blood flow was found to increase with very short exposure times at the therapeutic hyperthermia temperature and subsequently decrease as the exposure time increased. A higher therapeutic hyperthermia temperature augmented this effect.
Photo-oxidation behaviour of polyethylene/multi-wall carbon nanotube composite films

Abstract The resistance to accelerated photo-oxidation of polyethylene/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MW-CNTs) composite films was compared with the photo-oxidation behaviour of pristine polyethylene film. The polyethylene/MW-CNTs films containing different CNTs loading were subjected to accelerated UV-B exposure. At short exposure time, i.e. under 200 h, the rates of carbonyl formation are very similar to that observed for pristine polyethylene film but at longer irradiation times the carbonyl formation increases for lower MW-CNTs contents (0.1, 0.2 and 0.5% wt./wt.), and decreases for higher MW-CNTs contents (1 and 2% wt./wt.). ABSTRACT Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal (FLC) filters offer the speed of electronic light shutters and the vibration free operation. These characteristics make them ideal for applications requiring short exposure times and minimal blur, offering switching times of 0.0002 of a second. FLC filters can be used as the optical shutters for machine vision purposes, also in vision research. On the basis of FLC filters we have developed ferroelectric glasses, allowing temporal separation of optical information for both eyes.
